Question: Need a fuel filter I believe

Hello, about 3 weeks ago I ran out of gasoline. So I got the can and put in almost a gallon. It was very hard to start but of course it did. The car for past few weeks is hard to start. Always starts (of course I don't touch gas pedal) just takes a while to catch. Runs as smooth as always once it starts. No shaking or roughness. Nice and smooth. I replaced air filter, added fuel cleaner. How much for a gas filter to be replaced please & can you do it?
