Question: Only clicks when trying to start

When I try to start, I only get a click. Sometimes a 2nd or 3rd try will "catch" and then it runs well.
Lately, even with a new battery, it wouldn't start even connecting with a charger and finally had to use jumper cables to my car. Could it be the ground wire, not at the battery end but the other end?
