Question: Pontiac G6 3.9L Cold Start Issue

During the cold months, My 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP 3.9L will not start in the mornings. It won't even attempt to crank. I have to get out and pop the hood then pump the lower radiator hose about 10 times, then I will get in and the car will start right up. I started noticing this after I put a new thermostat in. It's like theres a sensor that stops you from starting the car if the coolant is low, but the coolant is not low at all. Is there such a thing? How do I get this fixed ASAP? I do not want to deal with the dealership.

I am not aware of a coolant sensor that lock out the crank circuit. I would suspect what you are doing may be wiggling a wire indirectly to the starter or something similar. You may have to take it in as this problem is not a very common issue.

Would this have anything to do with the Thermostat? Like I said, after I replaced it, the problem started. And it is not a ground issue. All i am doing is pumping the lover supply line about 10 times and then the engine will start. I know there is a fluid level sensor somewhere. If there werent, then why would it not start if the coolant is low. I dont think it is in the resovier either. You're sure there isn't a fluid level sensor anywhere in the lines?

I don't see any level sensor in the hose (on any car car really), but you may have one in the reservoir.

I did a quick parts check (I don't have your engine size so I could look up specifics) and it shows that some have a level sensor in the bottom of the tank. Easiest thing to do is pull yours out and see if there are wires connected tot he bottom of it. If there are, it has a level sensor. Your vehicle may have a self protection circuit that won't allow the vehicle to run without coolant. And the pumping of the hose is pushing fluid up to the sensor to allow the car to start. You may have an air pocket or just need a bit more coolant.

So the other day, the car would not start so I had my Girlfriend hold the clutch in and hold the key all the way to the start position. while I played around under the hood. As I went to squeeze the main supply line for the radiator I bumped a ground wire behind the LF headlight and the car started. It turns out, for some reason, the geniuses at GM decided to paint the frame of the car and then bolt a ground wire to it without scratching the paint off. I unbolted the ground and scratched all of the paint off of the frame with sandpaper and then cleaned up the ground connection and bolted everything back up, after a few sprays of WD-40. So far so good! It's been about 2 weeks of very cold temps and dampness and the car still starts up fine, even after sitting for a few days. Check all of your grounds!!!!!
