Question: problems w/ my 4sp. manual trans. What might be causing it to not take off?

This is the GLS 4dr. sedan w/ the DOHC 16 Valve Dual O.C. Runs great but is NOT the original engine. I can't say the same about the 4sp. Manual transmission though! Car will not go! If I put it in 4th acts like wants to go but of course no car wants to start off in 4th. When tryin to take off in 1st its like the brakes on & it WON'T GO! The prior owner had drove car into deep water/water got in lower half of engine & engine then needed replaced. Car ran great 4 approx. 700 miles following engine replacement then suddenly wouldn't go. Like tranny went out. Is it possible when it was drove in that high water/water maybe got into Tranny Casing & ruined it? Or any suggestions?

Water would have got into the case. But if you have replaced the oil in the trans it should be ok. But if not then you could have a bad trans. But it would have started makind a grinding noise or a bearing noise. I would thing you have a clutch problem. Have the clutch inspected.
