Question: replace cv axle and now there is a bad cluking noise

what could be wrong and is it all right to drive back to the garge

Anything could be left loose or the part could be defective. A careful visual inspection should be enough information to tell if it's safe to drive, if you don't know what you're looking for, try asking a neighbor or friend to look at it for you. In all likelihood it is probably safe at low speeds for a short distance--but it's always better to look first.
