Question: Reverse shift

My 97 hyundai elantra car was having trouble shifting to drive. Now it's having trouble shifting to reverse. What could be wrong with my car?

If you're having trouble moving the shifter, have the neutral safety switch and the shifter linkage checked. If the shifter moves smoothly, but the transmission is not engaging, check the fluid level and condition. Transmission services are recommended every 30k miles, and you may be due for one of those.

Thanks, since I asked that question my reverse shift completely gone. Is my transmission gone?

Not necessarily, but you should have it checked out. The question I asked you above is still relevant: are you having trouble moving the shifter, or does it move easily but the gear doesn't engage? Either way, you should still check the fluid level and condition, and have it inspected.
