Question: Should the transmission fluid be changed without servixcing the transmission filter?

Ford garage recommended changing the transmission fluid at 49000- 50000 miles without servicing the transmission filter. Is this corrrect?

I've never heard of servicing the transmission without changing the filter on a Ford. Some Japanese makes have a screen instead of a filter and it just needs to be cleaned when servicing, so if this vehicle has a screen instead of a filter, that would make sense. Again, not to say there isn't one, but I've never seen a Ford with a cleanable screen in the transmission.

You should ask the shop why replacing the filter isn't recommended to see what their reasoning is. It may be correct, but in my experience, I have always changed the transmission filter on Ford products when serving the transmission.

You can also check our Servicing Your Car section for service recommendations. It does a pretty good job at showing what you need at different mileage intervals.. Many transmissions don't require service at all and have lifetime fluid.

Check your owner's manual. Service information should be listed in it as well.

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
