Question: Smells hot after travel

Checked oil and down a quart. Checked under truck and can't find any spots on ground where oil was leaking from. Temp gauge reads normal. No lights on and runs good besides that. Noticed it has been smoking more out of exhaust. Normal exhaust color and smell but seems like a lot but it could be normal? 96 land rover range rover se 4.0 v8

It sounds like you could be burning oil, but checking for wet areas on the engine is also a good idea. Having a compression leak-down test done will locate the source of any internal leaks.

Definitely may be burning oil. Checked under neath car as thorough I could. Noticed oil was dripping Some on oil pan but the bolt is tight almost looks like oil is leaking from top of engine. Gasket? Valve cover? I can't notice any dripping on ground only when I actually check oil through my dip stick.

To locate an oil leak, you have to find the highest point. Anything leaking up high will drip on everything below it. And overtightening gaskets is worse than having them too loose. Replacing gaskets is the only way to fix leaks, not tightening bolts.

It's more likely the valve cover, but you should take it to a shop for an inspection. Most shops will not charge to look at it and give you an estimate.
