Question: Something broke, but what...

I have a 2001 Ford Escort and yesterday the car wouldn't turn over (made all the other sounds). Then as it was actually about to turn over we heard a big thud and now all it does is click when I go to start it.
So any idea what broke or got lodged and where?

Hmm... unfortunately, that is the kind of situation where you really need someone to inspect the engine physically. It is possible the engine seized up, so you can try to see if you can turn it over by putting a wrench on the front crankshaft bolt and see if it will move.

If it does move, I would start inspecting the starter circuit. If it doesn't move, you are probably looking at some serious engine repairs.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
