Question: spitting and sputtering

I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 with 106xxx miles on it. The problem is that when Im driving my rpms will drop to 200 and it will try to shut off and spit and sputter then it makes a "bang" or "popping" noise. I've tried fuel injector cleaner and it didn't help.

May be the Crank Position Sensor is not working well. It sends out the RPM signal to the PCM. If it is bad, there is no RPM signal, and the PCM will not command the injectors to fire. Easiest way to see if it works is to hook up a scantool and crank the engine. Monitor the datastream for RPM. If you see RPM then the sensor is working, if it reads zero RPM, then there is a problem with the Crank Position Sensor circuit.

Also remember to start with the basics.

For all hard starting or engine performance issues, you should always start with the basics. Make sure the tune up items are done and check the charging and starting systems. The engine must have the basics done in order for it to be able to run correctly. Many things can cause this type of problem, and the simplest sometimes get overlooked.
