Question: Steering Noise

A week ago my steering went from soundless to frequently squealing on turning. Took it to the garage, they said the problem was that the front struts were nearly done and must be replaced right away . I let them go ahead (742 plus tax) and picked up the car later that day. Steering noise still there and persisting yet. So - did I really need the struts replaced/was I misled? Or maybe in addition to worn struts, there is still a problem they just missed the first time? Is it likely to be a costly problem?
