Question: The engine ignites but immediately dies unless you push the gas. What's wrong?

As soon as you let off the gas the engine dies. I have been told it might be the fuel pump or it could also be the timing belt. What do you think?

Your vehicle has an IAC (Idle Air Control ) valve. When it opens or closes it increases or decreases the amount of air it lets into the throttle body. By changing the air flow, it controls the idle speed. Yours sounds like it is not reacting.

How easy is it to fix and what would you estimate the cost to be?

IACs are around $50 and it should be right on top by the throttle plate. Most have two or four bolts and one electrical connector. Fairly easy.
