Question: there an oil leak from the back of the engine?

I noticed oil dripping on the ground as I was driving and smoke (oil burning smell) coming from back side of the engine by the fire wall. Is this bad?

It does sound like you have an oil leak, but anywhere you have one, it will end up blowing to the back of the engine while you drive. Some oil leaks are pretty easy/cheap to have repaired, like the valve cover gasket. You'll first have to find the leak to know how much it will cost to repair it, and as long as you keep an eye on the oil level and don't let it get below the low line on the dipstick you won't do any harm to your engine.
