Question: Timing belt replacement.

This car should have had the timing belt replaced at 60K. I am now getting ready to have this done at 78k. Dealer has quoted $650 for the job. A local repair shop says $1225 because they say I should also replace the water pump at the same time. Do you agree? The maintenance schedule on this car does not say anything about replacing the water pump.
Thanks!

There is so much labor in the replacement of the t-belt. I always recommend the replacement of water pump and all the idler pulleys. But 1225 sounds a little hight for a repair shop. I would ask the dealer how much for the t-belt and water pump. The dealer should always cost more then a repair shop.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
