Usual maintenance recommendation is every 30k (you can check the 'your service schedule' link on this site to see if that is correct for your vehicle), so you're likely due for one now. Or you can have a mechanic check your fluid, they should be able to tell if has been done recently.

But if I just bought a car, unless the fluid is new looking, I would have it done now and be on the safe side.

Thanks Elizabeth. Followed up on the vehicle myself. It is a sealed system. You cannot check the fluid by dipstick. the service interval is every 40,000 miles and using the VIN, I was able to determine where and when the previous owner had the service done. Thankfully it was a 1 owner car and he was very meticulous. He had it done right at 40,000 miles. The Volkswagen service tech also advised that for this model the automatic transmission fluid is changed using some sort of computer system. Definitely sounds like something I'm not going to be taking to Jiffy Lube anytime soon.
