Question: What are the most probable problems with my car given the info below?

My car makes a rattling noise. It happens when I start it and when it is idling. It has white smile coming out of exhaust when I start it but not when I am driving it. Runs well as it is cruising. At times when trying to put it into gear when I am stopped, I have to put it in neutral to get it in gear( ex: if I am stopped and want to back up sometimes I have to put it in neutral and/or depress clutch a few times before it will go into gear. Can also Happen if I am at a red light then want to put it in first). Bt his happened with mr Toyota celiac too and I was told that there was a loose nut behind the wheel. NO, not me!!

If you're having a hard time getting it into gear sometimes, you can try having the clutch pedal freeplay adjusted, and have the clutch fluid level checked.

Need more info on the rattling noise: where is it coming from? Did you try listening with the hood up? It's hard to diagnose a sound over the internet, so be clear.

White steam out the tailpipe when warming up is normal. It's only a problem if it continues the whole time you're driving.
