Question: What causes black smoke to come out the exhaust

My car will start up and then it chokes and cut off while black smoke comes out the exhaust.

Black smoke is a sign that you're running rich. If the check engine light is on, have it scanned for codes. If no codes, test the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor, and have the residual fuel pressure checked.
