Question: What causes my engine to whine?

I own a 1990 g20 Beauville van, recently the engine started whining upon startup and acceleration. I have a feeling it's a belt or chain of some sort because the sound is coming from the opposite side of the engine that the alternator is on. I'm curious as to how much money I can expect to pay for the repair and how vulnerable it is to keep driving it minimally.

It’s really hard to diagnose this type of problem long distance. You'll need to have a mechanic listen to it to actually isolate what the noise is.
