Question: What could cause a clunk sound when automatic transmission is switched from park to drive?

Sound is heard when changing from park to drive and also going into reverse. This sound can also be heard when accelerating from a complete stop. The vehicle is rear wheel 4x4. 1997 chevy suburban

Sounds like either a motor or transmission mount may be broken (and the power train is shifting as you put it into gear) or possibly the transmission has an internal fluid. A quick check at a shop should be able to isolate what is going on.

Check your fluid level in the transmission, as low fluid can cause this type of issue as well.
