Question: what could cause the car to run hot?

Thermostat stuck closed. Your fan is not cooling the radiator. Make sure both upper and lower hoses are close to the same temp. If they are the same temp the thermostat is working. If one is hot and one is cold and your gauge reads hot. then you mite need a thermostat. While you are checking that make sure your fan is working.
