Question: what could i have done by trying to keep push button starting my car after it was out of gas?

I ran out of gas on the way home from work an I tryed to restart my car a few times with no luck. After a few
Min I smelled someing burning then put gas in tryed to push start it again it seemed the battery was dead but even after I got a jump an gas it just clicks what could I have done with just doing something so simple as trying to restart it?

If you're hearing a click and nothing else, it sounds like the battery's charge is too low (it's easy for a jump start not to work if the cable connections are not clean). Remove and charge the battery, and have it load tested.
