Question: What is the cause of engine rough start

Not able to keep engine running without mashing the gas peddle to the floor. Dark smoke from tail pipe smells like unused gas? No service engine light came on. Told it was an intake manifold gasket?

You would not have the black smoke with a intake leak. I would say you havr a pressure regulator leak. Or an injector leaking. Both of those problems will not cause the CEL to come on.

After checking, it is not the pressure regulator or an injector, however when the mass air sensor was unplugged the engine came to idle with service engine light coming on. Also, there was no black smoke, though exhaust did smell. Is this the problem?

Yes that is the problem. I would replace the MAFF
