Question: What is the difference between a direct drive starter and a gear reduction starter?

I own a 1988 Toyota Tercel EZ with a single carb, 1.5L. I need a new starter and I've gone to the parts store to get one, but they asked me if I had a direct drive or a gear reduction starter. I know what a direct drive starter is. I've never heard of a gear reduction starter. What's the difference and which is better for my car?

You should use the VIN to filter the correct part for your vehicle. Or just bring the old one in with you and match it up.

A gear reduction starter uses a gear set to increase the torque output of the starter.
