Question: what is the manufacturers recommended interval for replacing the timing belt?

timing belt failed at 80,000 miles, and without warning. 70,000 mile dealer service was performed with 77,000 miles registered on vehicle. No warning by service mgr was given of impending failure, resulting in $3,100 service charges when failed on hwy doing 70 mph.

70,000 to 80,000. When they did the 70,000 mile service they should have told you it needed to be replaced. After looking on the internet they are know for braking timing belts. I would make a fuss about it to the dealer. They mite help you.
