Question: what is the vacumm pump, situated between the battery and the coolant tank, for?

i just started noticing that this vacuum pump is running loudly and intermittantly, as soon as the key is turned on. this truck has a cummins and an auto transmission.

I'd need to see the vehicle to tell you what it is.

Since it is a diesel, it may be a pump that runs the cruise control. If it is loud and runs a lot either the pump may be failing, or there may be a leak in the vacuum circuit.

It also could be the leak detection pump for the evap system. that should only run when the car is dead cold and only when the fuel tank is between 1/4 and 3/4 or a tank.

Like I said, I really need to see it to be 100% which one it is.
