Question: What should i look for when buying a used car?

I am thinking of buying a used car and it has 43,000 miles on it and the warranty will be 50,000 miles. This is a private sale so I don't know if I can buy or should buy an extended warranty? and if I need one, where could I look for? And where should I take it in for mechanical look up? Thanks
