Question: what should the oil pressure be on a 1985 VW Vanagon camper when engine is warm and at idle

I have a pressure guage on it now because I did not trust the idiot light, but it still show only 1 or 2 lbs. of pressure at idle when warm. It does not comsume oil or get hot, it just shows low oil pressure

You should have some oil pressure. I don't know of a specific number for your vehicle, but in general, you should have at least 10 psi at idle. 1-2 psi is very low.
