Question: What type of tachometer do I need to use to set idle speed

I have a 1984 Chevrolet C20 3/4 ton, 2wd, with a 350, 5.7L, and 4bbl carb. I am wanting to set the idle speed but am told not any regular tachometer may work. It's an H.E.I. system.
