Question: what will cause a rim to rip in half

i just got the front tires replaced on my 99 explorer and 8 days later i was driving it and the rim ripped in half causing a lot of trouble

Huge pot hole could do that, so could leaving lug nuts loose and excessive wobbling would add stress to rim.

If there was no problem before the new tires, I would be suspicious of the work recently done. May be hard to prove, however. You'll need someone familiar with auto forensics. Start by talking to your insurance company.
