Question: What would cause my 1997 dodge stratus six cylinder automatic from shifting into third gear.

My car does now shift into third gear. We think it is the shifting solenoid. We want a clear answer as to what the problem might be.

If the check engine light is on, you need to pull the codes to see what system is having a problem. If the trans won't shift into 3rd, the solenoid could be the cause, but a slipping clutch pack could be as well. If the transmission computer detects slippage, it can lock out the gear to protect the transmission. So you need really need the codes to see what is gong on.
