Question: when is it recommended to replace timing belt and water pump

We are thinking of taking our van (69800 miles) to a new mechanic for regular maintenance. He is suggesting that we replace timing belt and water pump on our van. He has never seen it, so he is suggesting it as a preventative measure to avoid problems which may result if the timing belt (or is it chain?) fails. Would you recommend replacing timing belt and water pump at this point, or would you wait until 100k miles?

I'd need to know your engine size to look up timing belt replacement specs and if you have a belt or chain. You can find that information also in your owner's manual in the service schedule and in our servicing your car section of this website.

As a general rule, most manufacturers recommend a timing belt replacement somewhere between 60K and 100K miles, but you should really look up the info specific to your vehicle. The dealer would know as well.
