Question: When to get timing belt replaced?

Hi, I took my 2002 Mazda Protege 5 into to be serviced at a local independent auto facility and among the items they mentioned may need to be addressed was the timing belt. The car only has 50,000 miles on it but it is slightly over 8 years old. Does age of the timing belt matter is it strictly the number miles? Should I wait till it has 100,000 miles?

Mostly mileage is important. If you get in the ten year range or so, you might consider it anyway as age does break down belts.
