Question: While driving, why does low oil pressure light come on then all dash lights & car dies?

Don't know when it will happen, & just have it parked now. It wouldn't start and new battery probably dead again. Last time driving (and other times also) after dash lights come on, steering stiffens, trouble getting to safe place out of traffic. Have added oil, ran fine at times for awhile after, then same problem. Dangerous. Only oil problem I had was in 2008 when having State Inspection done. Car was under warranty & Mech. told me to take it to my dealer because oil was leaking in rear wheel cylinders, which dealer corrected by replacing those cylinders.
