Question: why can't I take the key out of the iginition?

Purchased car at auction. The car starts, but can't remove the key from the ignition unless disconnect the battery. Does something have to be reset?

It is most likely that there is something wrong with the internal components of the ignition switch. You should take this to a shop that has experience with Land Rovers to find out if it can be fixed or if it needs to be replaced.
