Question: Why does my car have so little power?

I have a 1.4 petrol Golf - when I drive at 120km the revs go up to 35000 and it feels like the car can't go any faster and it gets very loud. I have only recently had a service done on it. I know someone who has a 1998 model 1.4 petrol- and its goes much faster at lower revs. Is there a problem with it or is it just the model? I can't seem to find any similar problems among other Golf owners. The car has 168,000km on the clock.
