Question: Why Doesn't the AC Work?

The fan runs and blows air, but doesn't get cold. There is no bad noises like when the compressor goes out. If it needs charged can I do that for myself?

A 1971 vehicle's AC system uses R12 refrigerant. To buy R!2 you need to be licensed. So it's not really a do it yourself repair. And since it doesn't work you are going to need a shop to isolate why it's non functional.

As to why it doesn't work, there are many reasons, but without looking at it (especially on a vehicle so old) there is no way for me to tell you why.

Your best bet is to have a shop look at it.
