Question: wont shut off by ignition or crank

Steering wheel was locking up while driving, jerked it to get it to release and then it wouldn't cut off or crank by the ignition - had to remove the battery cable to shut it off. Removed the ignition switch and tried to crank with a screwdriver but it cranked for a second then went dead and would not crank again. Mechanics in this area wont be back till January and I have to use my car to work. Please help
